Kutaro and Louisa Begin their Life

January 1, 2024 - Each New Year's, Kutaro sends a letter to his family in Japan: "Happy New Year, joy of the New Year." He addresses his parents and hopes they will pass the New Year in good health. He tells them "Rest at ease I am well and will pass the New Year well." There is war breaking out in Europe, so times are hard and he cannot send the money he would like. His income has gone down. All that he is able to do is make a living and he is not able to save any money. He also tells them he plans to start a new enterprise, and needs to save money for it.

According to the oral history, Mrs. Hamilton had promised the Mother Superior in Spain that she would ensure that Louisa was looked after well. Presumably, this would mean that Mrs. Hamilton would not approve of her seeing a gentleman who was not a Catholic and not a Christian, but a follower of Shinto.

The working relationship of Kutaro, as Mrs. Hamilton's gardener and chauffeur, and Louisa, the maid and tutor, led to a friendship where they both spoke in their new English language.

February 22, 1914. In his diary, Kutaro records his first date with "Patrocinio." They went to the Orpheum theater.
